Chevalier Machinery Inc. has introduced the FRG- 1000S CNC Rotary Surface Grinder, engineered to deliver enhanced surface finishes, rigidity, and intelligent automation for today's demanding precision grinding applications.
"As a larger counterpart to Chevalier,Äôs FRG-400/600S series, the new FRG-1000S scales up capacity while doubling down on an ergonomic, user-friendly design that simplifies complex operations," said a company spokesperson. "Designed for aerospace, mold & die, bearing, energy, semiconductor, and precision component manufacturers, the FRG-1000S combines hydrostatic rotary table technology, servo-driven motion, and SMART iControl CNC technology to maximize productivity while delivering outstanding accuracy and repeatability."
Expanded Capacity with an Ergonomic Edge
The FRG-1000S features an expanded √ò39.4" (√ò1,000 mm) hydrostatic rotary table capable of supporting heavy workpieces up to 2,644 lbs. (1,200 kg).
Despite its larger size and heavy-load readiness, the machine is designed around operator comfort and efficiency. Ample interior grinding space and an accessible double-door enclosure enable low-strain workpiece loading and unloading, while an integrated drainage system smoothly removes swarf for quick, easy cleanup.
With a maximum grinding radius of 20.7" (525 mm) and a maximum grinding height of 15.7" (400 mm), it offers heavy-duty capacity in an accessible package.
Dual Crossfeed Ballscrews
A major engineering evolution separating the FRG-1000S from the smaller FRG-400/600S models is its advanced dual crossfeed ballscrew design. While the smaller series relies on a single ballscrew, the expanded structure of the FRG-1000S utilizes two precision ballscrews to drive the crossfeed axis. This dual-drive configuration counteracts and absorbs the massive torsional forces generated when grinding large workpieces.
By minimizing axis twisting under heavy loads, the design promotes greater structural rigidity. For the operator, this means consistently accurate results and mirror-finish quality over long production runs without the need for constant, manual alignment corrections, the company reported.
Hydrostatic Rotary Table Offers Accuracy
"Unlike conventional bearing systems, the worktable rides on a uniform oil film that virtually eliminates metal-to-metal contact, providing exceptional vibration damping, higher rotational accuracy, greater load capacity, and longer service life," said the company spokesperson. "With programmable speeds from 10 to 80 RPM, the hydrostatic table delivers excellent stability and consistently superior surface finishes."
SMART iControl for Simplified Operation
To further reduce operator fatigue and minimize set-up times, the FRG-1000S is equipped with Chevalier's next-generation SMART iControl.
This intuitive CNC interface simplifies programming procedures and removes the complexity from heavy-duty grinding. It allows operators to quickly generate complex, single-cycle grinding tasks without needing advanced programming expertise. Features like Intelligent Auto Wheel Dressing and Automatic Dressing with Compensation allow the machine to run unattended for hours, eliminating repetitive manual adjustments and reducing human error.
Adaptive Finish Technology
Chevalier's Adaptive Finish Program automatically optimizes rotary table speed, grinding wheel speed, and vertical infeed throughout the grinding cycle. By continuously adjusting these parameters, operators can achieve finer surface finishes with less manual intervention, protecting the machine's longevity and the operator's workflow.
Heavy-Duty Precision Spindle, In-Machine Balancing
The grinding spindle is supported by six Class 7 (P4) ultra-precision angular contact ball bearings, providing rigidity for demanding grinding applications. Powered by an 11 kW (15 HP) spindle motor with speeds from 600 to 3,600 RPM, the machine offers the flexibility needed for aggressive stock removal and precision finishing.
Furthermore, an optional In-Machine Dynamic Balancing System allows operators to easily balance the grinding wheel directly on the machine, reducing wheel vibration to less than 1 micron and eliminating chatter marks.
