For manufacturers producing engineered-to-order equipment, customization can often come at the expense of production efficiency. Every project has unique requirements, making it difficult to standardize workflows while maintaining high quality standards and efficiency. One California manufacturer has built its manufacturing strategy around controlling as much of that process as possible. Rather than outsourcing major fabrication work, the company performs engineering, fabrication, and much of the assembly internally.

The company's manufacturing philosophy reflects the leadership style of Anoosheh Oskouian, CEO of Ship & Shore Environmental, whose early experiences adjusting to life in the United States after leaving Iran during the Iran-Iraq War shaped a practical, hands-on approach to management.

"Leaving Iran at a young age and continuing my education in the United States forced me to become independent very quickly," Oskouian said. "I had to learn how to adapt, stay focused, and take responsibility for my own path. These are principles I have carried into my career."

Oskouian previously worked in engineering before transitioning into manufacturing, and brought these experiences into her current role as CEO of Ship & Shore Environmental, experts in custom clean air solutions.

"In a production environment, you cannot operate at a distance," she said. "You have to stay involved, understand the process, and make decisions based on real conditions on the floor. I believe in understanding the technical and operational sides of the business, setting clear expectations, and making sure the systems we design and build perform the way they are intended in real-world applications."

Ship & Shore designs and fabricates regenerative thermal oxidizers (RTOs), thermal oxidizers, and complete volatile organic compound (VOC) abatement systems. These systems are designed to capture and destroy volatile organic compounds generated during industrial production. They help manufacturers comply with environmental regulations while maintaining efficient production processes. Primary industries served include flexible packaging and printing, chemical and petrochemical processing, plastics and polymers, general manufacturing facilities, and other operations requiring air pollution control.

Manufacturing Control Starts on the Shop Floor

Ship & Shore focuses on improving production efficiency through better process control, pre-assembly, and standardization across its fabrication and engineering workflows.

While each project is customized to meet specific process requirements, many of the underlying design elements and fabrication practices are identical across systems. Using CAD-based engineering and detailed fabrication drawings, the company establishes consistent production practices while allowing flexibility where customer-specific modifications are required. Standardizing core components and fabrication methods enables production teams to move efficiently from design through manufacturing. Because engineering and fabrication remain under one roof, any design changes can be communicated quickly. The approach supports consistent quality throughout production while maintaining flexibility.

Continued investments are centered on improving fabrication capacity, engineering resources, and control technologies, as well as expanding its ability to complete preassembly, prewiring, and factory testing before equipment leaves the plant. By maintaining these in-house capabilities, any potential issues can be identified before the finished product leaves the facility.

Digital workflows and control system integration also play a role, particularly in how the company develops and implements PLC and HMI systems. This helps ensure that what is designed is fully aligned with how the system will operate in the field, supporting smoother installation and start-up.

When it comes to newer technologies like AI, Ship & Shore takes a practical approach: "We focus on using data to improve system performance, identify issues earlier, and support predictive maintenance, rather than adopting technology for its own sake," said Oskouian. "The goal is always to improve reliability and efficiency."

"At the end of the day, consistent performance comes down to accountability and attention to detail at every stage of production," added Oskouian. "Those are the metrics that drive reliable results."

Responding to Current Challenges

Like many manufacturers, Ship & Shore has in recent years experienced challenges such as supply chain disruptions, material lead times, and cost volatility, while reliance on external vendors for critical components raised potential for delays and reduced visibility into project timelines.

Ship & Shore's in-house manufacturing strategy has reduced its dependence on outside suppliers for critical manufacturing operations. Consequently, the company can respond more quickly to changing customer requirements while continuing to adhere to strict quality standards.

"Domestic manufacturing has been a key advantage," said Oskouian. "It allows us to respond faster, coordinate more effectively with our customers, and provide better support throughout the project, from design through installation. That level of control and responsiveness is critical in this industry."

"The most critical requirements needed in our workforce today are technical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and personal accountability," said Oskouian. "In our industry, it is not enough to understand theory,Äîyou have to know how systems perform in real operating conditions."

For manufacturers looking to achieve greater quality, better manage timelines, and reduce dependency on outside variables, Oskouian stresses the need for operational and supply chain control wherever possible: "The more visibility and ownership you have, the more consistent and reliable your operation will be," she said. "At the same time, long-term thinking is critical. Investing in reliable equipment, preventative maintenance, and efficient system design will always provide more value than focusing on short-term cost savings."
