Edge Technologies, KUKA Feature Autonomous Robot Handling

Edge Technologies will partner with KUKA at IMTS to feature an FMB SL110 short loader with a KUKA robot to demonstrate autonomous material handling.
The FMB SL110 is a short bar loader that handles bar diameters from 10 mm (0.39") to 110 mm (4.33"). An inclined magazine rack holds up to 56 bars at 10 mm (0.39") or five bars at 110 mm (4.33"). The Edge Technologies IMTS display will feature FMB's bar lift accessory, a built-in bar lift that safely lifts bars into the magazine from floor level. KUKA's automated material handling system will automatically load the bar lift mechanism.
"With the FMB SL110, we listened to our customers' feedback," said Kevin Meehan, President of Edge Technologies. "Customers needed a safer and less labor-intensive way to load heavy bar stock. Our partnership with KUKA will further automate the process and enable shops to extend lights-out machining."
In addition to increased automation, the FMB SL110 features an intuitive control panel and mechanical functions that improve efficiency. A folding axial shift (X-axis) minimizes the footprint, and the axial shift allows for maintenance access and easy spindle liner changeovers. A polycarbonate window on the hood makes it easy to observe bar loading. A servo-electric motor automates V-tray adjustment via the control panel, eliminating manual bar-center set-up, making it suited for square, hex, or other profiled materials.
