Sodick Celebrates 50 Years of EDM Excellence
August 1, 2026
Sodick Inc. is celebrating 50 years of business and innovation this year.
Founded in 1976 by Toshihiko Furukawa, Sodick quickly reshaped the EDM industry. Just months after its founding, the company developed and delivered the world's first NC die-sinker EDM equipped with a microcomputer, setting a new standard for EDM manufacturing. During the 1980s, Sodick grew rapidly by expanding automated production in Japan while building a strong global sales presence through dealer networks and sales offices in Europe and the United States. This expansion led to the founding of Sodick Inc. just two years after the creation of Sodick Global, marking Sodick's transition into a truly international company. In the 1990s and 2000s, Sodick reshaped precision manufacturing through its pioneering of rigid linear motors and machining centers.
"Combined with the company's proprietary K-SMC motion controller, these innovations delivered backlash-free motion, higher speeds, and exceptional positioning accuracy," noted a company spokesperson.
In recent years, Sodick has sustained this momentum through focused innovation and strategic expansion, pioneering its iGroove+ wire rotation technology in 2022, and strengthening its leadership in micromachining with the new AP30L sinker EDM and AX350L wire EDM, its most precise machines to date.
This growth has been reinforced by the opening of Sodick's Canadian headquarters in Toronto in December 2024 and the appointment of Mark Sanhamel as President and CEO of the Americas, following his tenure as COO and executive vice president. Looking ahead, the company remains committed to advancing the future of EDM and micromachining and is preparing a major presence at IMTS 2026 (booth 338640) to showcase its latest innovations and future direction.
