Brooklyn's Tactical Solution to Close the Manufacturing Skills Gap

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, every year there are 44,000 new job openings for CNC machinists. This role is in high demand as it is crucial across various manufacturing sectors and is poised for significant growth in the coming years. Notably, these jobs start at an average annual income of $47,000 and can reach $64,000 after years of experience.

Recognizing this opportunity to upskill the community workforce, BNYDC provides Brooklyn, NY-based jobseekers and incumbent workers on the Brooklyn Navy Yard with free skill training in CNC operation and programming. This month, the program launched its sixth cohort of 15 trainees.

The training program is divided into Beginner (10 weeks) and Intermediate (six weeks) sessions on Saturdays and provides hands-on instruction on costly CNC equipment and tools. Participants work with CNC mills and lathes, in addition to a variety of hand tools and manufacturing software, and can obtain up to four certificates from the National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS) and two certificates from Haas:

  • Measurements, Materials and Safety (NIMS)
  • Job Planning, Benchwork and Layout (NIMS)
  • Lathe Programming, Setup and Operations (NIMS)
  • Mill Programming, Setup and Operations (NIMS)
  • CNC Lathe Operations (Haas)
  • CNC Mill Operations (Haas).

The training program is offered three times per year. Two sessions focus on operator training, where trainees learn the basics of operating the machinery. The third session is dedicated to programming training, where trainees are upskilled to design the software that is then loaded into the machines.

Additionally, the BNYDC is providing a roadmap for graduates once they complete the program to support job placement. For example, connecting with partners inside and outside of The Yard to potentially fill open roles that the graduates could be qualified for. Additionally, graduates receive guidance on resume-building and interview techniques to prepare them for entering the workforce.

Participants are trained on CNC machines to automate the control, movement and speed of machine tools by using preprogrammed computer software. As a result, CNC machines produce parts with a higher precision, causing less production waste and leading to a much safer manufacturing process than manual machines and are suitable to produce custom machined parts for various industries, such as medical, automotive, electronics and industrial.

Nanotronics, a science technology company located at The Yard that has redefined factory control through innovation, supports this program by providing trainees with the workspace and machine usage required for the course.

The CNC Operator program is an entry-level course and is therefore open to anyone, regardless of skill level or experience in manufacturing. Participation is limited to Brooklyn residents only, and the program expects applicants to develop a baseline understanding of what CNC machining is to best leverage the course before beginning.
