Tooling Technology for FRPs
July 1, 2015
"Fiber reinforced plastics, or FRPs, have proven to be an innovative solution to the demands of energy efficiency in the aerospace industry," said a KOMET spokesperson. "They are incredibly durable yet lightweight, reducing loads, drag and energy consumption. However, these composite materials present their own special machining challenges. FRPs are brittle, heterogeneous materials, and the glass fibers within them are particularly abrasive. The glass sections of FRP require sturdy drills and tools, while the plastic pockets need to be machined with care. Composites have thusly presented a unique challenge to those who use them in manufacturing."
Using its TOOLS PLUS IDEAS approach, KOMET has developed a new class of specialty tools under its RHOBEST line that are specifically suited for composite materials. "Due to an innovative ultrananocrystalline diamond coating and specific design, the surfaces and geometries of RHOBEST tools are preserved and the coating is compact, wear-resistant and high-performing," said the spokesperson. "As a result, the tools maintain their sharpness, giving them a long tool life and making them well suited for machining fibrous composites."
