Hyundai WIA, the machine tool division of Hyundai Motors, produces the factory automation manufacturing systems that are used in each of the Hyundai-Kia Motors and its Tier One suppliers' manufacturing facilities throughout the world to produce over 8 million vehicles a year. "Whether it is an engine block, cylinder head, transmission case or practically any component of the power train, Hyundai WIA has produced proven manufacturing systems that are not limited to machining," said a company spokesperson. Systems for part transfer, robotic welding lines and robotic assembly lines have been developed and implemented globally. All of these systems start with the basics: process planning.
In the planning stage, the production facility is designed to optimize the workflow, and the processes are developed to be foolproof. While the manufacturing system is being designed, simulation software is utilized well in advance to determine and verify problems involving the process. Corrective measures, predictable and accurate cycle times, and production rates can then be established.
Hyundai WIA can produce factory automation lines incorporating part conveyors, inspection/measuring systems, spray machines/washing systems, insert machines/press systems and test/leak test machines. Along with these, the company's jig and fixture section can design and build workholding systems for machining, inspection and welding - all processes that involve part touching - while its robot section creates systems to move the parts by use of conveyors, overhead gantries and articulating robots.
Specialized chip cutting machines have been designed solely for the purpose of factory automation. These machines, whether vertical or horizontal machining centers, have been designed for use with overhead gantry systems for part loading and unloading. According to the company, gantries are preferred to eliminate cluttered floor space and they can be more cost effective than other types of load/unload systems. Manipulators are developed to meet diverse industrial requirements, ranging from the assembly of miniature components weighing only a few grams to automobile frames weighing hundreds of pounds.
