End-to-End Material Flow Solutions

Vehicle bodies are transferred through final assembly by an electrified monorail system for heavy loads. The system links the various production stages with one another.

Construction work is under way on a new production plant for Mercedes-Benz Vans in Charleston, SC. A new body shop and paint shop are being built and the existing assembly department significantly expanded. Eisenmann is providing end-to-end material flow solutions.

Eisenmann is supplying skid conveyors that will link the paint shop with the assembly department, plus an automated high-bay warehouse that will serve as a decoupling and sequencing buffer for painted vehicle bodies. An engine pre-assembly line and a powertrain installation line will be added to the assembly department. A key element within the facility is an Eisenmann electrified monorail system used to transfer vehicle bodies. This conveyor for heavy loads has been in operation since 2006, and will be enlarged from 17 to 57 hangers. Eisenmann is assuming complete responsibility for implementing the project. This will include both the conveyor equipment and all components for final assembly.

Until now, Mercedes Sprinter and Metris (Vito) vans have been produced in Germany, shipped to the U.S. in a dismantled state, and then reassembled in Charleston. "Daimler sees the U.S. as one of the world's fastest-growing markets for light commercial vehicles, so it is now expanding the existing plant to create a full-fledged manufacturing facility," said a Daimler spokesperson.

Eisenmann is a global industrial solutions provider for surface finishing, material flow automation, thermal process technology and environmental engineering.
