Remanufactured Machine Tools

Bourn & Koch was founded in 1975 to rebuild and retrofit Sundstrand machine tools. It has a long history of successfully rebuilding and retrofitting machine tools from many different brands. Bourn & Koch restores legendary American machine tools to OEM specifications.

"When investing in a remanufactured machine tool, you can expect to produce the same quality parts as you would see on a new machine at a fraction of the cost," said a company spokesperson. "Whether you have a machine that you are looking to remanufacture, buy a new-to-you machine or looking for a custom solution, we can help you find a machine that fits your needs."

Bourn & Koch draws a distinct line between rebuilding, retrofitting and remanufacturing. While the processes are similar, each has its own benefits, depending on the desired solution. Bourn & Koch also offers a comprehensive range of services other than remanufacturing, rebuilding and retrofitting, including repair parts, field service, new machine sales and custom machine building.

"When investing in remanufactured machine tool systems, you can expect to produce the same quality parts as you would see on a new machine at a fraction of the cost," said the spokesperson. "Although the manufacturing processes share similarities, each offers distinct advantages based on the desired outcome. Rebuilding primarily involves mechanical restoration. Retrofitting, on the other hand, is incorporating new technology on older manual equipment. Remanufacturing combines the strengths of both approaches."

The process of remanufacturing starts with completely disassembling the machine down to the castings. All major machine systems are evaluated for rebuild or retrofit to new technology. Afterward, all wear items are replaced that do not meet OEM print specifications, all way surfaces are reconditioned to reduce friction and hand scraping brings the machine back to its original alignments. Outdated components are then updated with the newest CNC technology and safety features.

The in-house repair team has the ability to rebuild or repair specific components, such as gearboxes, spindles or magnetic chucks. This process is very similar, where the component is evaluated by the highly skilled team of assemblers at Bourn & Koch, and rebuild recommendations are provided to the customer.

As the OEM for Blanchard, Mattison, Bullard, Barber-Colman and a long list of other machine tool companies, Bourn & Koch has rebuilt many components for many machines over the decades. Magnetic chucks and traverse gearboxes for Blanchard grinders, or the hob swivel for Barber-Colman gear hobbers are just a few examples of specific components that Bourn & Koch has rebuilt.

A few other examples, in recent years, of how Bourn & Koch has helped in the re-commissioning of older machine tools:

  • A 66" Bullard vertical turret lathe was partially reconditioned, started up and requalified for a manufacturer of railway components.
  • Two mothballed Acme-Gridley multispindle machines, were were required for production for a large agricultural equipment company, were restarted and brought back online along with support equipment.
  • A three-station rotary transfer machine, which produces a finished part every 2.8 seconds, was also recently fully remanufactured for a large equipment manufacturer.
