Heavy-Duty VMC Designed for High-Accuracy Positioning

"The ROMI D 1500 VMC, is designed for durability, rigidity and capacity combined with dynamics and speed," said a company spokesperson. "Available in 50- and 40-taper versions, the VMC performs extra heavy cutting within its large work envelope, with X-, Y- and Z-axis travels of 60”, 30” and 30”, respectively. A two-speed gearbox spindle and heavy-duty oversized construction enable extra heavy cuts."

The VMC’s C frame is made from heavily ribbed cast iron, said to eliminate vibration while promoting good surface finishes and long cutting tool life. Four oversized linear rails in the Y-axis support the machine’s saddle and worktable, holding parts up to 4,000 lb. and delivering X-axis accuracy over the full travel range of the machine and up to 1,181 IPM axis speeds.

"The placement of the motor and gearbox ensures no offset and promotes steady, smooth movement of the headstock along the Z-axis. This design reduces torsion on the headstock and provides rigidity, long-term accuracy and repeatability," said the spokesperson. Large-diameter, pre-tensioned ball screws in double-nut preloaded design, minimize the potential for thermal growth and promote accuracy and high-speed positioning.

The machine spindle cartridge is designed for stiffness and cutting stability. Ultra-precision spindle bearings are lifetime lubricated and enable standard spindle speeds ranging to 6,000 RPM. The two-speed gearbox head, standard for the 6,000 RPM version, gives full power at only 425 RPM and provides 364 lb.ft. low end torque. When higher RPMs are required, a range of 30 HP headstock options with 8,000 RPM, or 10,000 or 12,000 RPM with direct-drive spindle motor are available.

Additional features include a Siemens 828D control with simulation and conversational programming, a full enclosure, a spindle chiller and a high-speed automatic tool changer are standard equipment. Many options, such as chip conveyors, tool probing, part probing and more can help manufacturers meet their needs.
