Modernizing Knee Mills with Retrofit Systems

Shops across North America continue to rely on Bridgeport-style knee mills and similar manual machines for a wide range of machining tasks. While these machines remain mechanically sound, many are limited by outdated controls and manual operation. Southwestern Industries, Inc., manufacturer of TRAK Machine Tools, offers a practical alternative: ProtoTRAK CNC retrofit systems that transform existing equipment into highly productive, easy-to-use CNC machines.

ProtoTRAK retrofit systems are available with two control platforms: the ProtoTRAK RMX and the ProtoTRAK KMX. Both are designed specifically for toolroom and low-volume production environments where flexibility, ease of use, and quick set-up are critical.

The ProtoTRAK KMX is widely used for knee mill applications due to its balance of capability and simplicity. It enables operators to transition from manual machining to CNC with minimal training, using conversational programming rather than traditional G-code. Features such as the Auto Geometry Engine (AGE) allow users to input partial print data and have the control calculate missing geometry automatically, reducing programming time and eliminating the need to return to CAD for minor details. The system supports a wide range of machining operations, from simple drilling and positioning to complex pocketing and profiling, making it suitable for quick jobs as well as more involved parts.

For shops requiring more advanced functionality, the ProtoTRAK RMX adds a touchscreen interface, enhanced graphics, and expanded programming capability. The RMX incorporates powerful solid model verification and interactive toolpath visualization, allowing operators to confirm machining strategies before cutting begins. Its enhanced ProtoTRAK Assistance (EPA) system provides on-screen guidance, helping users navigate programming steps and reducing the learning curve for less experienced machinists. According to the product overview, this level of assistance allows the control to effectively "teach" the operator during use, improving efficiency on the shop floor.

A defining feature of ProtoTRAK systems is their conversational programming approach. Operators select machining events-such as drilling, milling, or pocketing-and enter dimensions directly from the print. The control generates the toolpath automatically, with real-time graphical feedback. This approach enables machinists to program parts quickly at the machine, without requiring extensive CAM experience.

Retrofit kits are delivered as complete packages, including motors, CNC control, ballscrews, mounting hardware, and all necessary components for installation. This comprehensive design helps ensure consistency and reliability while simplifying the upgrade process. As described in the retrofit overview, the kits are engineered to convert manual machines into CNC systems capable of significantly improved throughput and repeatability.

Beyond productivity gains, retrofitting offers important economic and operational advantages. Shops can extend the life of existing capital equipment, avoid the lead times associated with new machine purchases, and maintain continuity for operators already familiar with their machines. The transition is typically straightforward, as machinists can continue working in a familiar environment while benefiting from CNC automation.

ProtoTRAK retrofit systems are compatible with a wide range of knee mills and similar machines from major manufacturers, making them a flexible solution for diverse shop environments. Whether upgrading a single machine or standardizing across multiple units, retrofits provide a scalable approach to modernization.
