Large-Capacity Flatbed Lathe from Momentum-CNC Takang to Premier at IMTS

The Momentum-CNC Takang MLC4042 PLUS horizontal flatbed lathe will debut at IMTS 2026 in Select Machining Technologies' booth 339100.

An all-new range of large-capacity flatbed lathes will make its world debut at IMTS 2026 in Select Machining Technologies' booth 339100. Designed for manufacturers machining large, heavy, and complex cylindrical components, the MLC Series-developed through a partnership between Momentum and CNC Takang-emphasizes flexibility and value-driven performance.

"We are continuing to hear from customers who need large-capacity turning solutions that are capable and cost-effective," said Peter Nye, President of Select Machining Technologies. "The MLC Series expands our portfolio in that direction, giving manufacturers more flexibility to match the right machine to their application."

The MLC4042 PLUS machine offers 40.1" (1,020 mm) of swing over the bed and 165.3" (4,200 mm) between centers, with the capacity to hold workpieces up to 17,600 lbs. (8,000 kg). Its MLC PLUS configuration increases flexibility and capacity by incorporating a dedicated set of steady rest guideways, allowing the turret to pass freely for uninterrupted machining of long shafts and complex workpieces.

Designed for heavy cutting, the machine is built on a single-piece Meehanite cast iron bed with box ways for increased rigidity and vibration damping. A 3 V + 1 slant guideway design in the Z-axis provides enhanced support for the carriage, while MLC PLUS models include two additional box ways for open-type steady rests.

The headstock gearbox incorporates three bearing support points for increased stability. The spindle shaft and gears are manufactured from molybdenum chrome alloy steel, heat treated and ground for durability and performance. Each spindle undergoes a two-step balancing process-first prior to headstock assembly and again before shipment.

The standard 2-axis CLT-100-8T turret features a double-cam-plate indexing mechanism for smooth and rapid tool disc rotation. This compact and durable system is suited for heavy-duty precision cutting. The hydraulic drive system helps ensure precise indexing, clamping, and unclamping, while proximity detectors eliminate the risk of tool disc change errors.

The standard tailstock includes a 185 mm rotating quill, with larger options of 250 mm and 350 mm available. The quill design mirrors that of a CNC lathe spindle, supporting high rigidity and accuracy. All tailstock sizes feature an MT6 inner taper and an A2-8 or A2-11 spindle nose. The tailstock body is seated on two box ways and includes collision protection and failsafe clamping.

The MLC Series is designed to support a broad range of large-part applications, offering swing capacities from 30" to 50" and between-center lengths extending to approximately 40' feet, with the ability to accommodate workpieces up to 37,400 lbs. between centers.

A key advantage of the MLC Series is its modular design, enabling manufacturers to tailor each machine to specific requirements. Available configurations include larger spindle bores up to 14.5", increased tailstock capacities, live tooling with C-axis and optional Y-axis capability, and a variety of steady rests and specialty attachments.
