The DMG MORI Medical Excellence Center partners with medical customers by offering innovative manufacturing solutions, complete greenfield projects including certification, and an integral consultancy service.
Medical technology is advancing in pace with the continuous population growth, increasing life expectancy and technological progress more than 5% every year. An increase in capacity and further developments in orthopedic technology and surgical instruments make the medical industry one of the key sectors for DMG MORI. The machine tool manufacturer has been concentrating its years of experience and manufacturing expertise in the area of medical technology applications at the DMG MORI Medical Excellence Center at DMG MORI in Seebach, Germany. The experts located there support customers in the design and implementation of integral manufacturing solutions and even implement complete greenfield projects including certification.
As a central industry unit within the group, the DMG MORI Medical Excellence Center supports DMG MORI sales from the first contact with customers to successful project completion. Around two dozen turn-key projects were completed in this way in the first half of 2019, including with global players in the medical industry. "This has often enabled significant two-figure optimization potential to be achieved in production processes," said Horst Lindner, Head of the DMG MORI Medical Excellence Center. "The market is experiencing enormous growth: according to the German Federal Statistical Office, as of February 2019, the annual growth prospects are over 5%."
Integral and innovative manufacturing solutions are required to reconcile the necessary economic efficiency and high quality requirements. Lindner justified the sometimes high investment costs with the competitive pressure: "The cost per workpiece is decisive," he said. "Optimal processes include efficient programming, durable tools and high machine utilization through intelligent automation. This all increases productivity so much that the extra investments become profitable in just a short period of time. Key factors for process optimization are the limited production space and personnel costs. Our experts in the Medical Excellence Center consequently design space-saving manufacturing solutions, which can be operated with a minimum of personnel due to a high degree of process autonomy."
Early involvement in customer projects makes it possible for the DMG MORI Medical Excellence Center to plan the manufacturing process right from the very beginning and continuously optimize it in terms of quality as well as machining time on the basis of the entire DMG MORI portfolio. There is an optimization potential of up to 30%, especially for machining times. In particular, digitalization is growing in importance. It enables efficient order fulfillment and seamless manufacturing documentation. The service offer extends to greenfield projects, as Horst explained: "This allows us to support our customers in entering the field of medical technology as well as developing entire production sites. This includes technological aspects as well as normative and regulatory subjects."
