When creating new clamp designs, Cimquest customer Phillips Precision prints the new clamp on a Stratasys uPrint 3-D printer, uses Mastercam CAD/CAM to program the part and then sends the NC file to the CNC machine wirelessly with a Cimco wireless DNC.
Cimquest is a CAD/CAM, 3-D printing and rapid prototyping integrator serving design, engineering and manufacturing professionals in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. "At Cimquest we position our customers to select the appropriate tools for their needs, most effectively utilize those applications and remain current with emerging technologies through training and consulting tailored to their unique operations," said Cimquest CEO Rob Hassold.
Phillips Precision specializes in prototypes and light production. Six years ago Phillips Precision bought its first coordinate measuring machine (CMM). After the equipment was delivered, the company's first challenge was to hold the parts down on the granite table for inspection. Using the standard way seemed cumbersome and limiting.
This gave them an opportunity to address a problem. They would design a modular, interlocking grid plate system with threaded holes that lock in and release from a slim docking rail. This concept created a leaner, faster way to inspect parts, both for its own use and to sell to other companies. To improve efficiencies and throughput further, Phillips Precision developed clamps for holding machined parts.
Each time Phillips Precision designed a new clamp, personnel would print the new clamp on a Stratasys uPrint 3-D printer, use Mastercam CAD/CAM to program the part and then send the NC file to the CNC machine wirelessly with a Cimco wireless DNC. The whole system worked seamlessly. "With control over the entire production cycle, we are able to keep producing new products and make improvements to existing products," said Phillips Precision's Co-Owner and President Steve Phillips. "When the economy took a turn for the worse in 2008 and most shops were struggling, we were developing and making our own products and creating our own business."
