Georgia Northwestern Technical College Machine Tool Technology Program Earn Accreditation from NIMS
November 1, 2015
Established in 1965, the Machine Tool Technology Program at Georgia Northwestern Technical College (GNTC) became nationally accredited as of August 14, 2015. NIMS accreditation is a benchmark for metalworking training programs in the United States as based on national, industry-driven and industry-written skills standards.
By becoming accredited, the staff and faculty at GNTC have met NIMS quality requirements, which included a self-evaluation, earning of NIMS national skills credentials by faculty and by students and an intensive two-day on-site evaluation at the college facility.
The on-site evaluation occurred in March 2015 and was conducted by a NIMS Evaluation Team that included Certified Team Leader Joan Cook of RICOWI, Inc. (OH) and Education Representative Shawn Williams of Bradley Central High School (TN).
"The Team was highly impressed after the comprehensive facility inspection, observation of students' safety habits and a series of in-depth interviews with faculty, administrators and local employers," said a spokesperson.
Ultimately the team issued GNTC's program above-average ratings in the evaluation areas of:
- Program Features
- Program Administration
- Equipment, Tooling & Measuring Devices
- Program Faculty.
This accreditation is based on NIMS National Skill Standards for Machining Level I with a focus on 11 machining credentials, many of which GNTC students have earned. Leading by example, Instructor Philip Shirley has earned all 11 credentials himself. Those skills credentials include:
- CNC Milling Operations
- CNC Milling Setup, Programming & Operations
- CNC Turning Operations
- CNC Turning Setup, Programming & Operations
- Drill Press I
- Grinding I
- Job Planning, Benchwork & Layout
- Measurement, Materials & Safety
- Milling I
- Turning Operations: Turning Between Centers
