Seco Tools Drives Forward Environmental Sustainability Efforts

Recycled carbide Seco Tools

In an effort to become more sustainable in its machining practices, Seco Tools has partnered with Fusion Coolant Systems (Fusion), which offers an environmentally friendly coolant technology designed to lower overall carbon footprint while increasing overall performance. Both companies have a goal to make machining easier and more effective for manufacturing leaders and engineers while maintaining environmental awareness.

"We have had a working relationship with Fusion Coolant Systems for many years, from the inception of the technology when they developed it years ago. We have worked on multiple customer projects and had heavy interaction on the R&D side to come up with solutions that help solve customer issues. So, it really was just a natural transition to formalize this partnership," said Rob Keenan, President of Seco Tools, North America. "It is about providing complete solutions, and we feel strongly that Fusion has a state-of-the-art solution that is going to help medical customers, especially in their medical device manufacturing processes."

"There is so much innovation in the medical sector, including a strong migration towards additive manufacturing (AM). Fusion's Pure-Cut solution allows for dry or near-dry machining while improving operating efficiencies," said Brian Ahlborn, Fusion CEO. "The Seco team has worked to exploit this technology in their tooling on applications that have now been running for several years in several industries. Our relationship has grown naturally and is focused on helping customers solve complex problems."

Recycling is Key at Seco Tools

"Seco Tools is uniquely placed to make a strong contribution to the circular economy, which prioritizes separating economic activity from the consumption of finite resources and designing ways to remove waste from our system of economic activity," said a company spokesperson. "Though it is by no means the only aspect, recycling plays a vital role in the circular economy by asking us to look at how we use the earth's scarce and finite resources, and what can be done to ensure that we extract maximum value and usage from them."

Recycling will play a key role in reaching Seco Tools ambitious goal of being 90% circular by the year 2030, with a number of broad changes to processes and business models leading the way. "It is a challenging target, but we see this as very important for our company and our business," said Ted Forslund, Sustainability & Audit Coordinator at Seco Tools. "What is good for Seco Tools is that we already have very good recycling processes, so now it is about creating a good partnership with our clients so that they understand the value of us buying back tools, so that it becomes a closed circle where nothing goes to waste."

Forslund continued, "Globally, only 8.6% of the resources we use are recycled, which means that over 90% of everything is used once and then disposed of. Due to the nature of the business of Seco Tools, the company is in a strong position to change that paradigm by buying back tools that have reached the end of their productive lives and recycling or repurposing them into new tools. "If we increase that kind of trade where we buy back old and get customers to understand the advantages of it, we can reduce the climate impact as we will not need to use new materials and metals. It is a win-win in many ways. Additionally, the tools we produce using recycled materials are of the same high standard-there is no drop in quality."
