Ethernet Based PLC for Acorn CNC Control

Centroid has expanded its DIY CNC controller capabilities with a new Ethernet based PLC Input/Output expansion module for the Acorn CNC controller. The new i/o module, the Ether1616, adds an additional 16 optically isolated inputs and 16 relay isolated outputs to the system.

Up to three Ether1616 boards can be added to an Acorn system for a total of 56 inputs and 56 outputs. Three different input voltages can be used: 5 volts, 12 volts and 24 volts. Input voltages are mix and match capable and are selectable via bank of four of inputs at a time with the provided plug-in SIP (Single In-line Pack) resistors. The default input voltage is 24 VDC. Sixteen relay outputs are provided as well and can handle a wide array of voltages and currents.

Both the Ether1616 and Relay 8 modules provide both Din Rail mounting holes and Standoff mounting holes to allow the DIY installer a variety of mounting possibilities. The provided dedicated power supply is sized properly to provide enough power to drive the 16 relays. There are indicator LEDs on Ether1616 Inputs and on the Relay 8 Modules that indicate the state of the inputs and outputs. The Ether1616 communicates with the Centroid CNC12 software via Ethernet connection for fast, reliable service.

The Ether1616 inputs and output are easily configurable using Centroid's Acorn CNC Setup Wizard. The new software user interface features an easy drag and drop menu to assign functions to any of the Ether1616's inputs or outputs to command a variety of CNC machine tool functionalities.

"The Ether1616 is designed to work the Acorn CNC controller, which is a 4-axis CNC control system that combines Centroid's robust CNC12 CNC control software and offers the DIY user industrial grade CNC features, options and performance at an entry level DIY price point," said a company spokesperson. Both mill and lathe CNC software are included with the Acorn CNC control kit. Acorn is both a CNC hardware and CNC software solution. The CNC control board hardware and CNC12 control software is included with the kit along with a logic power supply and hookup cables.

"The Acorn control hardware was designed from the ground up to work in conjunction with Centroid's CNC control software, eliminating typical hardware/software incompatibility issues found on other DIY systems," said the spokesperson. "The Acorn controller, which connects to a Windows 10 PC via Ethernet for robust PC to CNC hardware communication, can command most popular servo motors and drive packages as well as stepper motors and drives since the Acorn outputs industry standard step and direction drive command signals."
