Partnership to Provide HMIS Labels

Labelmaster, a provider of solutions for hazardous material transport compliance, has partnered with the American Coatings Association (ACA) to offer hazardous materials identification system (HMIS) labels. HMIS labels can help serve as a means of complying with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) revised Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) workplace labeling requirement.

"While the revised HCS requires compliant GHS based labeling on shipped containers, standard HMIS labels can still be used as part of a comprehensive workplace hazard communication and training program to help companies comply with OSHA's HCS," said Nikki Burgess, Regulatory Affairs Specialist with Labelmaster. "These labels feature an easy-to-understand rating system so that safety professionals and other employees will have `quick glance' information as to whether a chemical may be hazardous and how severe a risk has been evaluated for it."

The labels communicate in-plant hazard information through the use of colors, numbers, letters of the alphabet and symbols of types of personnel protective equipment (PPE).

"Our partnership with Labelmaster will help ensure businesses across the country improve their hazard communication programs," said Stephen Wieroniey, Specialist: Health, Safety and Environmental Affairs with the ACA. "In addition to meeting regulations and avoiding hazard communication violations from OSHA, workers will be properly informed about the hazards of chemicals in the workplace."
