Line of Horizontal Milling Machines with Vertical Heads

Sharp horizontal milling machine with vertical head

Sharp Industries, Inc. of Torrance, CA, offers an economical line of horizontal milling machines that are also equipped with a vertical head.

The Model VH25 is equipped with a 5 HP motor for the horizontal spindle, NST#40 taper with six geared speeds, ranging from 80 to 1,350 RPM. With a cutter in the horizontal spindle, the machine can perform milling, drilling and boring operations on a horizontal plane allowing chips to fall away from the work piece. With several cutters installed on the arbor with the arbor supports, the machine can mill multiple keyways or slots. The horizontal mill is built for machining heavier pieces because the cutters have support from the arbor, as well as a bigger cross-section area than a vertical mill. The design of the horizontal milling machine allows for the rapid removal of material off of the piece one is machining. It is can also be used for squaring up the edges of big pieces of plate and for drilling holes in the ends and edges of larger size parts that cannot be fit under the spindle of a vertical.

The work table size is 10" x 56", with 16.5" x 36" travel, and is hardened and ground for durability. It is driven by a built-in gearbox motor, allowing 12 different feed rates and offers rapid traverse for quick positioning of the work piece. The knee is also powered by motor for rapid positioning of the table vertically. The slideways are designed with two box ways that are hardened and ground offering rigidity during machining. They are also coated with Turcite for retaining lubrication oil and resist long term wear.

The 4 HP vertical head is equipped with #40 taper spindle with variable speeds range from 60 to 4,500 RPM. The vertical head can be swung around to work as a vertical milling machine.

A larger version of the machine, Model VH3 is also available for bigger and heavier works.
