Safety Technology for Robots

Racer999, the second robot in the Racer family, is a 6-axis articulated robot which has inherited all the key features of the Racer 7-1.4. With a reach of under a meter in length (999 mm), it is built for applications in a limited space including assembly, handling, machine tooling, packaging and more. Designed for a payload of 7 kg, the robot can carry up to 10 kg with a limited excursion of the axis 5 for high-speed pick and place.

During a live demonstration the Racer999 was placed on a luminous base to demonstrate ROBOSafe technology. A green light showed that the machine is operating at maximum velocity, a yellow light showed that the machine slows down when an operator approaches the work area and a red light showed that the machine stops when the operator is inside the area occupied by its trajectories.

The ROBOSafe technology - developed in the context of a Comau project dedicated to Safety - uses repeated controls, that can be performed at the same time yet independently from one another and tracks the exact position of the robot at any moment, certifying its entire range of action.

External security sensors connected to the control unit of the robot detect a human presence in the cell and, when the operator approaches, they slow the robot's movements or they stop them in case of extreme proximity. The cycle is automatically resumed when the operator leaves the area.

This system helps avoid downtimes. It also facilitates the construction of more compact cells and layouts because they can be designed taking into consideration the actual work area of the robot rather than the potential overall area.

"The efficiency of Racer999 is compatible with safety. In addition, Racer999 can count on E-motion software to optimize movements and increase its fluidity in order to reduce cycle times by up to 25% compared to previous-generation robots," said a company spokesperson. The reduced dimensions of the robot and the controller also provide lower energy consumption due to the installed energy reduction system.
