Over 130 People Attended SWI's New Showroom in Novi, MI
SWI Assistant Regional Manager Chuck Duckworth Discusses the TRAK 2OP with Customers
"Over 130 visitors toured Southwestern Industries' (SWI) Novi, MI, showroom during a recent two-day open house," said a SWI spokesperson. Visitors witnessed demonstrations of TRAK lathes, bed mills, knee mills, the TRAK LPM VMC for high-mix / low volume work, and SWI's latest product offering, the TRAK 2OP portable VMC.
The transportable TRAK 2OP is the first CNC machine designed specifically for second-op work. It can streamline a shop's workflow by enabling the shop to deploy an additional spindle where needed so an operator can tend multiple machines simultaneously. The machine offers a solution for shops that use the primary machine to perform both complex machining and less-challenging second-op-type duties. This frees the primary machine to carry out the difficult work it was designed for while shifting secondary operations to the portable unit. Similarly, the TRAK 2OP is well suited for shops that perform primary batch-processing work for jobs on a turning center followed by secondary batch-processing work on a manual machine. Its use eliminates manual processes, which are labor-intensive and introduce the risk of operator error. Plus, the operator who had been left waiting for the turning center to complete its cycle can fill that time tending the second-op machine.
Because the TRAK 2OP has a footprint of 2.5 x 4 feet, it can be located in a small area that is convenient for the operator to access. When necessary, the machine can be easily moved to new shop floor locations using a pallet jack. In fact, Southwestern Industries includes a pallet jack with each TRAK 2OP that's purchased. A standard eight station tool changer eliminates the need for manual tool changes, while integral Jergens ball locks facilitate quick changeovers.
As with all Southwestern Industries machines, the TRAK 2OP uses the ProtoTRAK conversational CNC. Programs can be generated either at the machine or remotely for common second-op tasks, such as drilling, tapping, countersinking, face milling, and the creation of profiles, pockets and bolt hole patterns.
The Novi showroom is the sixth one opened by Southwestern Industries and is located at 24301 Catherine Industrial Drive, #104, Novawest Tech Center, Novi, MI.
