Mazak Brings Medical Applications to MD&M Minneapolis

At MD&M, taking place Oct. 29 and 30 in Minneapolis, MN, Mazak will showcase its machine tool technology and applications, designed to help medical part manufacturers optimize their operations and reduce design-to-market time at the lowest possible cost.

Mazak will have its new VERTICAL CENTER UNIVERSAL (VCU) 400A 5X and VERTICAL CENTER UNIVERSAL 400T machining centers perform real-world cutting demonstrations of medical parts. Applications engineers will also be available to discuss predictable and stable manufacturing methods to stay compliant with stringent medical industry standards and government regulations.

According to the company, it engineered its small-footprint VCU Series, which includes nine machines total, to take a simple but innovative approach to precision part production. "While these machines are basic in their design, they feature advanced technologies that bring maximum productivity and value to those making medical components such as implants, orthopedic devices and surgical instruments," said a company spokesperson.

The VERTICAL CENTER UNIVERSAL 400A 5X vertical machining center features a 5-axis rotary/tilt table with high-speed roller gear cam technology designed to cost effectively produce small complex parts up to 15.74" in diameter and 12" high. The machine comes standard with a CAT-40 taper 10,000-RPM spindle, with 12,000 and 20,000-RPM spindle speeds also available. The machine's standard 30-tool storage capacity is designed to ensure continuous machining operation and an optional 40-tool magazine is also available.

"As the first in the VCU Series to feature milling and turning capabilities, the VERTICAL CENTER UNIVERSAL 400T is designed for medical part manufacturers looking to increase their productivity via affordable multitasking capabilities. The machine employs a robust 15-hp, 10,000-RPM (12,000-RPM optional) HSK-63A milling spindle and powerful 2,500-RPM turning spindle. Tool storage capacities of 20 or 30 tools ensure continuous machining operations, while a servo-driven automatic tool changer reduces non-cut times. Furthermore, the machine's turning spindle has complete C-axis table rotation that indexes in 0.0001-degree increments to offer full contouring operations," said the spokesperson.

Other Mazak machine tool offerings for this segment include INTEGREX multitasking machines with second spindles, lower turrets and bar loader systems as well as vertical center compact machining centers in 3, 4 or 5-axis configurations.
