New High-Speed Bi-Lateral Contouring Machining Center

Kitamura Machinery has introduced its Xross-Cut ultra-high speed, bi-lateral contouring vertical machining center (VMC). "Designed to simplify today's machining challenges, the Xross-Cut combines the benefits of 3D machining capabilities with increased operator convenience for efficient operation and overall ease-of-use," said a company spokesperson.

"This machine is the first of its kind," said Dr. Akihiro Kitamura, the company's President. "The Xross-Cut allows a person who has no experience with NC programming to easily, accurately and intricately machine parts by creating an .art file or STL file from a single object. Kitamura started developing this new technology in 1997, and the machine has since been upgraded and re-engineered to become the Xross-Cut - a 3D machining center for the next generation. As 3D printing technology is built upon, we see the Xross-Cut as having the same characteristics, but different in scope. Instead of building material, we are removing material with the same ultra-quick movements, at the same time creating 3D objects with a variety of materials in differing states of hardness."

The Xross-Cut can also use a standard NC program for ultra-high-speed machining. The VMC features spindle speeds of 70,000 RPM and a maximum cutting feedrate of 120,000 mm/min (4,724 IPM).

"The unique configuration of the Xross-Cut allows for X and U axes bi-lateral movements at 60,000 mm/min (2,362 IPM), allowing for 3D machining capabilities three times faster than a conventional mold machine," said the spokeseperson. "With a fives times faster processing speed, the Arumatik-Mi CNC controller offers a smooth control process for fast machining of complex workpieces." A 512 GB hard disc drive allows the Xross-Cut to run large programs over 100 hours continuously from the hard disc or USB memory.
