Smith's Precision Machineworks was faced with the challenge to increase production, machine additional components for current customers and also to develop a more diversified customer base by acquiring new manufacturing technology.

Multitasking machines and state-of-the-art manufacturing software were carefully evaluated. After defining their manufacturing need, Smith's Precision Machineworks selected the Ganesh Cyclone 32CS with a 4' Edge servo bar feeder. The machine tool was purchased through Ganesh's Alabama distributor, Metal Worx Machinery. Sid Rostami assisted Smith's Precision with machine selection and installation. "We chose this machine because we have been very satisfied with our current Ganesh machining center. We also believe it will give us an advantage over our competition due in part to being able to complete a part in a single set-up," said Kandi Smith, Managing Member of Smith's Precision Machineworks. "In fact, on a recent manufactured part, the cycle time went from 10 minutes to four minutes, forty seconds and from three set-ups to one."

The Ganesh Cyclone 32CS features complete turning, milling, front, back and side work for complete machining. It has an 18" full Y-axis and high-performance C-axis. There are 27 total tools (18 main and seven sub-spindle) with 11 of them live (four radial, three axial, four sub-spindle). Additional specifications include:

  • 10 HP main spindle
  • 1-3/8" bar capacity
  • XYZ travels (main spindle): 7.28" x 19.29" x 6.5"
  • XZ travels (sub-spindle): 11.54" x 11.61"
  • C-axis (main spindle): 360,000 positions
  • C-axis (sub-spindle): 360,000 positions
  • Full parts catcher with conveyor
  • Chip auger
  • Double-anchored ball screws
  • Machine weight: 7,800 lbs.

"The Ganesh Cyclone 32CS is working great," said Smith. "We have met our production, quality and surface finish requirements for the finished parts as they come off the machine. Set-up times have been reduced because once the program has been created, all we have to change is the collets and spindle liner as determined by the machine's tooling capacity. One stainless part we run has seen the machining time drop from 10 minutes for each part to less than two minutes. This is due to the part being completed in one set-up."

Smith's Precision Machineworks manufactures components from materials ranging from plastics, copper and hardened steel for such industries as automotive, steel mill and defense. Additional capabilities include horizontal 2-axis lathes with turning capacity up to 24" x 40" and vertical machining up to 40" x 20". FeatureCam software is used for programming. The company recently started construction on a new facility, which will allow an expansion of up to four times its current size.

Founded June 1, 2001, by Heath and Kandi Smith, the company is a family owned CNC job shop. After graduating from high school Heath attended trade school. He worked for two other shops before starting the business in a small shop in their house. Kandi is a graduate of the University of Alabama and was a teacher until the size of the business required her full time. "Smith's Precision Machineworks strives to produce quality parts and maintain good relationships with its customers and employees," said Smith.
