Nozzle Welding Station for Heavy Duty Welding

Welding automation provider Pemamek Oy has introduced the PEMA Nozzle Welding Solution for pressure vessels and other heavy-duty welding applications. "By automating the nozzle welding operation, man-hours required for multi-layer welding processes and defects are dramatically reduced," said a company spokesperson.

Built-in lasers scan groove geometry in the workpieces, which typically contain large prepared grooves and thick plates, and automatically create robotic welding programs that adapt to the varying groove layers by continuously welding the grooves until a solid bond is formed. Any discrepancies between the pre-programmed groove geometry and the actual laser-scanned geometry are adjusted using the user-friendly WeldControl software family, which helps streamline the communication between the operator and machinery during welding operations. Production data monitoring, diagnostics, tracking and robot programming can be performed by one operator on a one-panel control system on the shop floor. Operators can also use Pemamek's Digital Showroom App, which allows users to experience how simple the company's welding rotator, roller beds and assembly station work.

"This nozzle welding solution can shave hours off of the amount of time it would typically take to perform multi-pass welding operations in thick-walled workpieces with irregular grooves," said Michael Bell, Sales Director, North America. "By combining the accuracy of laser scanning and the seamless transfer of the resulting scan data to the WeldControl software to generate a program specific to that application, robots can more quickly and accurately perform the multi-layer welding passes while the operator moves on to the next project. The dramatic reduction in errors and defects is proof enough that this technology works."

The entire PEMA Nozzle Welding Station can accommodate workpieces measuring 500 mm to 2,000 mm in diameter, up to 6,000 mm in length, 100 mm to 1,000 mm nozzle diameter (30 mm without scan function and depending on vessel radius), 300 mm distance between nozzles and a weight of 15 tons.

Pemamek provides welding automation technology and integrated manufacturing solutions to a wide range of industries including shipbuilding, alternative energies, heavy fabrication, oil and gas, wind energy and boiler manufacturing. The company offers welding positioners, column and boom units, roller beds and robotic solutions as well as the proprietary PEMA WeldControl programming and control software, among other technologies.
