Mitsui Seiki's 4-axis HU-100 horizontal machining center (HMC) is engineered to provide multiple advantages in the machining of mold and die components. The horizontal machine configuration and B-axis permit rough and finish milling as well as secondary operations including drilling, tapping, boring and gun drilling that otherwise would necessitate refixturing or moving the workpiece to another machine.
For the HU-100, X-axis travel is 1,300 mm (51.2") and Y- and Z-axis travels are 1,000 mm (39.4"). The machine's 1,000 mm (39.4") square table can accommodate workpieces weighing up to 3,000 kg (6,600 lbs.).
Gravity facilitates clearing of chips on a horizontal machine, avoiding recutting and possible degradation of surface finish. Dependable chip management also minimizes operator involvement, providing opportunities for semi-tended or unattended operation and automation. On the HU-100, a 60-pocket automated tool changer further supports unattended operation and shortens cycle times. The machine's 19.8 kW (40 HP), 50-taper spindle has a maximum rotation rate of 4,500 RPM, and a FANUC 30i CNC unit directs cutting paths and machine movements.
Machine rigidity is critical in achieving the accuracy and consistency required in moldmaking. The HU-100 is constructed of cast iron treated with a gas emulsion process that produces a solid, thermally stable platform. Hardened and ground tool steel ways maximize durability. Hand-scraped way mounting surfaces can achieve less than 2 arc seconds of straightness in all axes. The machine's length, width and height are 7,112 mm (280"), 4,368 mm (172") and 3,911 mm (154").
Tom Dolan, Mitsui Seiki Vice President of Sales and Marketing, said, "By combining the productivity advantages of horizontal machining methods with Mitsui Seiki's robust machine construction and proven technology, the HU-100 machining center helps mold and die manufacturers boost the competitiveness and profitability of their operations."
