Prioritizing Cycle Time and Consistency Maximizes Output

"INDEX's MS40-8 eight-spindle automatic lathe provides manufacturers with reliable process control, as reflected by unmatched Cpk measurements," said a company spokesperson. "The machine's capabilities result from a design that prioritizes both cycle time and consistency as the two key drivers of maximizing output."

The heart of the INDEX MS40-8 is a compact spindle drum with eight fluid-cooled motorized spindles, each providing 7,000 RPM, 24 kW of power and 57 Nm of torque. The spindles are characterized by infinitely variable speed control, high torque, low size and no maintenance requirements. Each of the machine's spindles uses hollow-shaft motor technology and cutting speeds can be programmed for each spindle position and cutting tool edge. "The cumulative effect results in optimized metal removal rates, surface quality, cycle times and tool life, all delivered with a high level of reliability," said the spokesperson.

"Process stability is further provided through the excellent thermostability achieved through the fluid-cooled spindle drum and dedicated chiller unit to remove heat from the work area," continued the spokesperson. "Additionally, the MS40-8 is available with Chipmaster, advanced software that applies variable feeds to produce small, easily managed chips that eliminate potential process interruptions caused by long, stringy chips."

The MS40-8 also offers enhanced flexibility. Accommodating bar stock of up to 40 mm in diameter, the machine includes two swiveling synchronous spindles for double rear end machining and deploys up to 18 cross slides with X and Z axes, as well as optional Y axes. According to the company, the machine is especially valuable to manufacturers producing high-volume, precision work in the automotive, fastener, connector, and aerospace industries.

With the increased number of main spindles and tool carriers, the MS40C-8 is able to completely machine even very complex parts in one operation. The two swiveling synchronous spindles are each able to apply up to seven rear end machining tools, four of which can be live. Additionally, two rear end machining tools can work simultaneously on the workpiece.

The MS40-8 accommodates a large number of stationary and live tools for front and rear-end machining. INDEX's front-open design concept does not include a longitudinal slide block and incorporates a V-shaped arrangement of tool carriers on the work spindles. External and internal machining operations using stationary or live tools can be carried out on every station, allowing high flexibility in optimizing the machining sequence.

Because users can set up live tools on the compound slides, multiple machining operations can be accomplished, including off-center drilling, thread cutting, inclined drilling, cross drilling, contour milling, hobbing, bevel gear cutting, multi-edge turning and more.

The MS40-8 can be used to maximize output for simple applications as well. If components only require a small number of tools, the MS40-8 can be run as a highly productive double four-spindle machine. In this configuration, the machine essentially becomes two four-spindle machines, each including a synchronous spindle for rear-end machining. As a result, each cycle outputs two finish-machined components from the machine.

The MS40-8 handles bar stock through a newly released bar loader, the INDEX MBL40-8. The machine can also chuck parts via a 110 mm chuck that allows machining of pre-formed, forged or extruded parts of up to 80 mm. To machine chucked parts, the MS40-8 accommodates automatic loading due to its generous work area. An optional built-in robot within the work area uses a double gripper to handle the loading and unloading of workpieces.
