The Mazak MEGA TURN 500M turning center with an upper turret for rotary milling is designed for speed and accuracy in large part production. "When paired with a mirror image ML model, it brings layout flexibility and operator convenience to shops that require two vertical turning centers but have limited floor space," said a company spokesperson.
The MEGA TURN 500M has a maximum diameter swing of 27.56" and can machine parts up to 19.69" in diameter and 18.19" high with a maximum load capacity of 1,100 lbs.
Available in 12", 15" and 18" chuck sizes, the machine has a powerful 30 HP, 3,000 RPM integrated spindle/motor headstock that is built to minimize vibration and generates up to 596 ft-lbs. of torque. The headstock also provides accurate C-axis positioning in 0.0001-degree increments.
In addition to its heavy-duty turning capabilities, the machine's 4,000 RPM rotary tool spindle brings up to 70.4 ft-lbs. of torque to drilling, milling and tapping operations, while the bolt-on drum turret offers rapid tool indexing for 12 tools.
Axis travels on the MEGA TURN 500M are 13.5" in X and 20.5" in Z. The axes incorporate the Mazak MX Hybrid Roller Guide System, designed to achieve high levels of durability and reliability that result in long-term accuracy. The system increases vibration damping, handles high load capacities and eliminates tramp oil in the coolant by utilizing a greener grease-based lubrication system.
The Mazak Tool Eye pre-setter for static tooling comes standard on the machine. It is a fully integrated device that automatically transfers cutting tool data such as tool tip position and size information to the machine's CNC. It can also be programmed to monitor tool wear on a periodic basis.
The MAZATROL SmoothC CNC is available on the MEGA TURN 500M. The optimized control offers EIA/ISO and conversational programming, which allows entry-level operators to quickly program jobs at the machine for overall faster set-up times.
The CNC also offers several programming functions, including Variable Acceleration Control that maintains the optimal acceleration/deceleration for each combination of moving axes; Smooth Corner Control that reduces vibrations and shortens machining cycle times through cutter path adjustments made when machining into corners; and Smooth Machining Configuration that makes it easy to tune the parameter settings on a machine to correspond with the workpiece materials and application at hand.
