A 4340 forged and heat-treated part for the construction industry. The hole is 36-1/2" (all the way through the part), 6-7/8" diameter with an 11", 10" and 8" counter bore. Cycle time: 5 hours.

The Seco drill is 34" long with a 4-1/2" diameter head.

O.D. and I.D. chamfering may be done on both ends of the cutoff part as it is held stationary.

Bardons & Oliver, an Ohio manufacturer in business for nearly 125 years, and long known for its precision machine tools for parts machining and cutting pipe, tool and bar, also provides contract machining services at its state-of-the-art facility in Solon, OH, near Cleveland. Recently, the company needed additional capacity and capabilities for contract machining.

A larger machine envelope was required, in particular, a horizontal machine with a boring quill. Their team carefully researched their options, considering a wide range of new and used traditional table-type horizontal boring mills.

The end result was a decision for the Fermat WFT 13 CNC horizontal boring. It was determined that this was the best option in this class of machine. According to Bardons & Oliver, key distinctions that led them to make this choice included:

  • T-Type construction, which saved space
  • High-quality full wrap way covers and chip guarding
  • An ultra-high precision rotary table, coupled with rigid castings.

Specifications for the Fermat WFT 13 CNC horizontal boring mill also include:

  • X/Y/Z travels 118" x 78" x 48"
  • Live spindle with W-axis stroke of 29"
  • 360° rotary table
  • 40-position tool changer
  • Scales
  • Probes
  • 30,000 lb. capacity.

"The Fermat WFT 13 has a far superior fit and finish," said Brett Baldi, VP of Operations. "The Fermat machine exhibits better finish and high metal removal rates."

"This machine is saving upwards of 25% machining time," said Ben Bailey, Business Unit Manager of Contract Manufacturing. "We are almost to 30% time savings on most of our jobs. The horsepower-to-thrust ratios have allowed for different tooling options. One example is a 6-1/2 inch inserted drill we now use that saves us a very significant amount of time."

Bardons & Oliver machines components for a wide range of industries, including energy generation, fluid measurement, oilfield and gas, food packaging and assorted other industrial applications. It has a wide selection of machining centers and can machine parts to the following dimensions:

  • Raw material up to a 7-foot cube and 20,000 lbs. in weight
  • Finished size: X/Y/Z - 120"/78"/60"

and its horizontal and vertical lathes can create finished parts to the following dimensions:

  • 2"-84" in diameter
  • 144" in length.

Over the years, Bardons & Oliver has evolved from its beginnings as a manufacturer of bicycle hubs and machines. Today it is a modern provider of precision machine tool systems, which include incorporated materials handling input and offload tables and robotics. It also handles upgrades and rebuilds of older machines to bring them up to today's standards. The contract machining group has access to CMMs to ensure that parts are made to the customer's specifications, and support services to take customers' parts from design to finished product.

"Our solutions are engineered, and we stand behind them with training, service and parts," said William Beattie, President. "Our employees are veteran machine tool builders and machinists, and they are also the owners of our company. We are completely employee-owned, and one of our owners will be working with you from design through production."
