Automation and Robot Readiness for Deep Hole/Gun Drilling Applications

Efficiency, productivity and continuity are on top of every machine shop manager's mind today. The fatigue endured by a human worker during a day's work in loading and unloading parts on machines, moving material around the shop and lifting heavy parts can cause chronic body injuries. This is especially true when loading a four-spindle gun drill with heavy barrel blanks all day long.

The use of robotics and automation in shops really assists in ensuring that factories produce parts continually and consistently without interruption, making our country less dependent on imports. In today's world, issues like another global pandemic or interruptions in supply chain have negative effects on manufacturers. For these reasons, the use of robotics and automation has become more relevant to ensure factories run at optimal levels, especially for medical and defense applications.

The following are some examples where Absolute Machine Tools and Precihole have successfully integrated robotics and automation to make reliable solutions:

1. Robotic pick & place automation cell solutions for high-volume production of gun barrels for firearm manufacturing that includes use of auto door opening and closing feature and electronic interfacing

2. Robotic automation for line transfer of parts on skiving and roller burnishing machines for automotive parts and hydraulic cylinders

3. Conveyor or walking beam gun drilling automation for a wide variety of transmission, inputs, gears and other shafts for the automotive industry

4. Gantry style automation with fuzzy logic and AI for deep hole drilling of steel billets in seamless manufacturing of stainless-steel tubes used in the oil and gas industry

5. Completely automated transfer line of 24 machines for hydraulic steering assembly.

"All robotics and automation features provided by Absolute Machine Tools on Precihole machines are robust, well-designed and capable of enduring continual wear and tear," said a company spokesperson. "Innovation, creative engineering and keeping up to date with the latest technology like IOT 4.0 compliance ensures our customers the best value possible."
