Precise Slide Guide Motion Control
January 1, 2023
Using relatively large balls and raceway grooves sized closely to the radius of the balls increases the contact area and gives NB's SGL guides high load capacities and long travel lives.
The four-row/two-point contact design of the balls and raceways lowers the friction and wear while also stabilizing the linear motion, even if users choose to use a preload. The balls are positioned to increase self-aligning characteristics, so any dimensional errors created during installation are absorbed.
The slide guide's motion is smooth. One reason for that smoothness is that when force is first applied, there is no stick-slip, the phenomenon in which the balls stick to each other due to friction and then slide when the applied force overcomes the friction. The low friction design of the balls and raceway eliminate it (the coefficient of dynamic friction for the SGL and SGW slide guides is approximately .002 to 0.003).
