Douglas Manufacturing Team Member Wins National Welding Competition

Douglas Manufacturing announced that team member Payton Schmitt has won Clash of the Trades, Project MFG's National Welding Championship competition.

Fourteen welding students from across the country competed in the competition at Lincoln Electric's headquarters in Cleveland, OH. In this tournament-style competition, students have two hours to complete their project using GMAW, GTAW, material preparation, budgeting and other processes to build a pressure vessel, all to set specifications. The competition can be viewed at youtu.be/QP85XEjll6U.

Schmitt competed in various preliminary competitions before making his way to Cleveland to compete against 13 other welders for the championship.

"You do not know what jobs are going to be available in the future, but we all know the trades are going strong," said Schmitt, a graduate of the University of Alabama. "With the money I won, I will be able to do so much."

Project MFG gives students hands-on experience in problem-solving and technological aptitudes required for success in the field. Its ultimate goal is to develop the next generation of engaged learners who can identify challenges and develop innovative solutions for future manufacturing in the United States.

For more than 40 years, Douglas Manufacturing has provided companies all over the world with quality conveyor parts and solutions from its headquarters in Pell City, AL, and distribution centers in Dallas, TX, and Rockford, IL. Its diverse portfolio of components and engineered systems include pulleys, idlers, impact beds, magnetic separators and more.
