CAM Software for Medical Applications

ESPRIT is the flagship computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software of Hexagon's Manufacturing Intelligence division. The high-performance CAM system combines CNC programming, optimization and simulation of any class of machine tool into one common interface.

This smart manufacturing solution is utilized for a broad range of medical applications such as high tolerance, small parts produced on Swiss-type machines, such as bone screws, dental abutments and small surgical tools. ESPRIT can also handle larger components, such as hip and knee replacement parts produced on precision mill/turn machines.

Developed in collaboration with machine tool OEMs, ESPRIT offers a complete suite of post-processors that produce edit-free G-code to maximize machine tool capability and productivity.

ESPRIT increases productivity throughout the manufacturing process. While programming parts, users can leverage ESPRIT's digital twin technology to model the entire machining environment, including the part to be machined, fixturing, tooling and other parts inside the machining envelope. AI-based algorithms reduce manual data input, resulting in simplified programming and increased repeatability. With the toolpath specified, programmers can optimize programs using built-in machine simulation and verification.

Synchronization is conducted in the standard interface, and can be simulated to evaluate efficiency gains in real-time. Once the user is satisfied with the simulation, G-code can be generated by one of ESPRIT's factory certified post-processors. Hexagon has built a full library of digital machine packages complete with post processors and machine set-up files that are used by not only ESPRIT staff and customers, but by the machine tool OEM engineers as well.

ESPRIT CAM supports a broad spectrum of CNC machine configurations from large gantry machines to Swiss-type lathes. Machining processes from 2- to 5-axis milling to multiturret/multispindle mill/turn are fully supported.

"Because many medical components are produced on Swiss-type machines, ESPRIT is unique in its ability to meet those programming demands," said a company spokesperson. "The software provides an intuitive workflow supported by a full offering of milling and turning cycles, high-speed machining and freeform cycles backed by factory certified post-processing. ESPRIT users have the ability to go from a solid part to G-code that can be loaded directly on the machine with confidence."
