Horizontal Boring Mill for Heavy-Duty Applications

Summit's HTM5-XHD-ZL model is pictured with optional upgrades.

There are many approaches to modern milling applications, especially for heavier cuts. Summit's HTM5-XHD-ZL is a solution designed according to one customer's specific needs.

Standard features on HTM5-XHD-ZL models allow for complex jobs requiring large bore sizes and the ability to work on multiple axes. "The fully programmable, built-in 70 in. x 78 in. table provides plenty of room for large workpieces weighing up to 12 tons," said a company spokesperson. "Accommodating tailstock movement means having a bed that will allow for extended travel distances. Fully telescoping steel way covers provide the machine's bed ways with more than enough protection. Electrics are installed in a centralized, column-mounted, fully accessible cabinet. Each load circuit is provided with fused or thermally monitored overload devices to ensure complete protection." This machine comes with a #50 taper spindle with a 5" diameter, and the main drive motor is available in 40 HP or 50 HP.

The control on the HTM5-XHD-ZL provides flexibility for the operator. Built in the manual to CNC concept, it allows full manual operation or the choice of Siemens conversational control. This machine features HEIDENHAIN absolute scales, Siemens servo motors and drives and UL/CSA electrics. All controls are located on an operator-friendly pendant with a standard 6 axes electronic handwheel for precision positioning.

The tailstock is a large casting with hardened and ground ways and a precision ballscrew, which carries the outboard support bushing for line boring. An electronic handwheel allows precise positioning and reduces set-up time. The tailstock can be removed to facilitate large workpieces. The double pump coolant system is an in-ground tank with two submersed pumps. The vertical attachment is a standard #50 milling machine type spindle that will accept a variety of readily available tooling. The 360° rotation right-angle attachment allows complete flexibility. The optional 19-5/8" diameter facing head attachment can be mounted directly to the spindle face. It is capable of operations up to 190 RPM and can handle diameters up to 35-1/2".

The HTM5-XHD-ZL is part of Summit's line of HTM Series heavy duty horizontal boring mills. Summit's HTM series features modular design with incremental travels. This allows customers to get the travels and features they require without paying extra for unnecessary options. Each HTM model is constructed with heavily ribbed closed grain cast iron that is heat-treated and stress-relieved. "The combination of mechanical and electrical engineering ensures that Summit HTM boring mills are the most efficient and cost-effective milling solution," said the spokesperson.
