Efficient Corundum Grinding of Large Workpieces

With the Numerika series from Zema, the Junker Group offers economical and reliable cylindrical grinding machines with corundum. This range now extends to include the Numerika GH 3500 2W, a machine with two wheel heads each with their own cross slide. In comparison to the one-wheelhead machine, in which the workpiece is turned and ground manually using two clamping operations, simultaneous grinding of the workpiece is engineered to reduce the total cycle time by more than half. "The ability to carry out the complete grinding process in a single clamping set-up also raises quality," said a company spokesperson. These features, combined with a high level of automation, are ideal for users who mainly machine high quantities of large workpieces.

The new Numerika grinds workpieces up to 350 kg, or even up to 1,000 kg on the optional KARGO platform. The largest version has a clamping length of up to 3,000 mm, a two-sided grinding length of 780 mm and a peripheral diameter of up to 650 mm.

The large grinding wheel sets, with a maximum diameter of up to 915 mm and correspondingly longer service life, result in longer tool lives.

"Despite its power, the Numerika GH 3500 2W features a compact design, which allows loading the machine from above in facilities with ceilings less than five meters high," said the spokesperson. On request, the Junker Group can also equip the machine with fully automatic loading and unloading systems to ensure smooth production.

"The Numerika is low maintenance due to Zema hydrostatic technology," continued the spokesperson. Both the workpiece and wheel head spindles are mounted on hydrostatic bearings, and the X- and Z-axes of the cross slide rests are hydrostatic as well. "A fine layer of oil enables virtually perfect spindle rotation with constant shaft centering and uniform, jolt-free and precise movement of the cross slide rest," added the spokesperson.

The lack of metal-to-metal contact during this process requires less energy for the drive and reduce wear. At the same time, the hydraulic medium provides permanent cooling and acts as an enhanced vibration damper.

"Each of the two work heads are driven with the same power," added the spokesperson. This feature increases the torque transmission and quickly brings heavy workpieces to high speeds. In addition, supporting steadies balance longer workpieces, ensuring faster grinding with better quality.

"With the Numerika GH 3500 2W, Zema meets the highest quality and efficient production requirements," said the spokesperson. "The torsionally rigid machine bed also helps to deliver perfect grinding results. The machine is also quite easy to use: the user-friendly control system offers all required input screens for precise grinding and outstanding surface quality."
