(l-r) Fred Mason, QVI Sr. V.P. of Marketing; Christine Whitman, Chair of RIT's Board of Trustees; Keith Polidor, QVI Vice President; R. Stephen Flynn, QVI Vice President and President of its OGP Division; and H. Fred Walker, Dean of RIT's College of Applied Science and Technology, cut the ribbon dedicating the new lab.
Quality Vision International (QVI) has formed a partnership with the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) to outfit a new metrology lab in the university's Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering & Technology department in the College of Applied Science & Technology.
The lab formally opened with a dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony in December.
QVI donated three pieces of equipment to the lab including:
- OGP SmartScope Flash 302 multisensor measuring system with Through-the-Lens Laser, Touch Trigger Probe and ZONE3 metrology software
- QVI SNAP large-field-of-view digital measuring system with SNAP-X instant measuring software
- CCP CC-14 optical comparator with Projectron, VidiProbe and eCAD virtual chart gauge system.
RIT students will use the QVI systems to measure parts they design and fabricate in courses on CAD design, Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T), CNC Machining and 3-D Printing. New undergraduate level courses on Basic and Advanced Metrology will be offered starting in the Spring semester, covering principles of measurement and use of metrology tools ranging from gauge blocks and calipers to advanced multisensor systems from QVI.
"The QVI equipment provides RIT students access to technology they can use to prepare for careers in manufacturing," said a company spokesperson.
"We are proud to support RIT's expanding programs in advanced manufacturing and metrology," said Keith Polidor, Vice President of QVI. "To be competitive in today's manufacturing environment requires continuous improvement in design and production processes. Metrology is the essential process control feedback that enables manufacturers to improve quality and costs. Using our equipment in their course work will help students hit the ground running as they begin careers in advanced manufacturing."
Metrology is the science of measurement, used to verify that parts manufactured in industries such as aerospace, automotive, electronics and medical devices, meet their original design specifications.
