Fives' Investments in Manufacturing Science Yield Multiple Patents

Fives Machining Systems, Inc. has announced 10 recent patents. The patents cover new production technologies and enhancements, quality improvement technologies and component life enhancements. The developments are concentrated in the fields of metalcutting and composites processing.

"Eight of the patents relate to composite part manufacturing, a technology where Fives holds a world leadership position, as demonstrated at the recent Paris Air Show," said a company spokesperson. The composites patents cover a fiber placement system for small, flat parts; a reversing fiber placement head; a robotic fiber placement system; a 6-axis gantry-mounted fiber and tape laying system; and an automatic spool loader.

Patents related to metalcutting systems include two different vibration damping technologies for machine tool structures, as well as a vibration damper designed for rotary encoders.

"We are fortunate to be part of a global multi-disciplinary company like Fives that produces intellectual property in many different fields, and invests a large percent of annual sales in research," said Dan Janka, Chief Executive Officer, Fives Machining Systems. "Sometimes solutions created for one industry lead to new technology in an unexpected area. This cross-pollination of technology is one reason why Fives joined the prestigious Jules Verne Research Institute. Our goal is to increase the rate of our patent applications, because we must constantly study new materials and manufacturing concepts to create solutions needed to make today's dream products a reality."
