Menges Roller Expands Capacity with CNC Technology

Menges Roller has announced the expansion of its capacity with the purchase of an advanced technology lathe capable of manufacturing industrial rollers up to 20' in length. According to Menges Roller, the CNC lathe has state-of-the-art computer interfaces and very precise machining capabilities.

"As coil converters and other industries have moved toward wider lines, faster line speeds and more complex processes, Menges Roller has seen increases in its industrial roller business, especially large format models," said a company spokesperson. "This new machine seamlessly integrates with Menges Roller's CAD department. When the Menges Engineering Team completes the modeling and design for a roller, the roll's schematics can be uploaded directly to the new machine. Additionally, with the machine's advanced milling functions, roller shafts, outer shells and internal components can all be made to very exact tolerances. This machine can fabricate components that are accurate to .0001 inch."

The new CNC machine is a European-made Toolmex TUR930-1100MN. It can machine rollers up to 20' long and up to 8,800 lbs. The machine itself weighs over 22,000 lbs.

"Larger and wider rolls are increasing in popularity," said Matt Menges, President of Menges Roller. "We are fabricating new rollers for new lines as plant managers attempt to increase production. We are even refurbishing existing rollers to make them wider or to modify the OD for new applications. Our expansion is simply a response to our customers' needs."

Menges Roller serves the allied steel, coil converting, metal polishing, paper and plastics industries. Menges Roller fabricates large process rolls (up to 30'). The company also provides a full range of maintenance and repair services, including comprehensive roll refurbishing, journal and core replacement, dynamic balancing, parabolic crowning, cylindrical grinding, chrome finishing and covering options. The company recently won a 2013 AIMCAL Technical Excellence Award for its Hybrid Chill Roll design, and last year it won an award for its TPU-based (thermal plastic urethane) rollcover compound, which is used in coil converting and steel processing industries.
