Bearing Monitoring Solution



GTI Spindle Technology has announced the availability of Bearing Guardian, a new solution to monitor and automatically react to CNC machines when a vibration threshold is reached.

Bearing Guardian can be used to monitor any or all of the bearings on the machine. It is optimized for spindle or ball screw bearings. Set-up is a simple turn-key solution. Bearing Guardian comes with the sensor and an industrial Windows PC with software preinstalled. The software features an intuitive user interface. Drag sliders up and down to adjust the various threshold limits. Live updating on the graph is displayed to provide context for these limits being set up.

Bearing Guardian installs that are connected to the PLC allow start and stop commands based on vibration levels, user set alarms and variables. Granular commands can also be performed. These commands allow the CNC program to reduce spindle RPM until the vibration level returns to acceptable levels to make good parts. If RPM speed falls below required level to cut parts an operator alarm will sound.

Bearing Guardian includes three monitoring modes: limit analysis, spindle bearing analysis and fault detection.

Limit analysis detects machine irregularities and utilizes three types of sensors: vibration, strain and analog. These monitor power, pressure, coolant flow and other types of feedback from the CNC machine. This mode can detect bent bars in the bar feeder.

Bearing analysis mode measures spindle vibration to assess bearing health. This mode captures both acceleration and velocity data, which provides data on both bearing health and if a spindle is misaligned, imbalanced or has looseness.

Fault detection mode monitors the upper and lower threshold limits. This mode helps identify an excessive condition such as machine impact, over-heating or extreme vibration. A time stamp is captured when a threshold is reached. The time stamp is captured alongside with the corresponding vibration data directly before and after this threshold occurs.
