Five-axis machining is a cost-effective means to reduce set-ups and increase accuracy for multi-sided or complex parts. Haas Automation's TR series trunnion rotary tables are designed to put 5-axis capabilities within reach of the average job shop.
"These simple bolt-on solutions for machining complex parts can turn almost any 3-axis mill into a 5-axis workhorse - at a fraction of the cost of a dedicated 5-axis machining center," said a company spokesperson. "They are ideal for such industries as aerospace, model making and tool and die, where complex shapes, multi-sided machining and 5-axis work are the norm."
Available in six configurations with platters from 110 mm to 310 mm, the TR series dual-axis trunnions bolt directly to the table of a 3-axis vertical machining center (VMC) to position parts to nearly any angle for 5-sided (3+2) machining, or provide full simultaneous 5-axis motion for contouring and complex machining. They can easily be removed when not needed.
Haas trunnion tables are driven by brushless servomotors on both axes and provide ±120° of tilt and a full 360° of rotation. Each features a precision-ground platter of heat-treated 4140 alloy steel, with six standard T-slots (0.625") equally spaced at 60° for easy fixturing (the TR110 has a pattern of tapped holes rather than T-slots). Several servo control configurations are available, making the Haas trunnion tables easy to interface to almost any machine, whether it is a Haas or another brand.
The smallest of the TR series, the TR110, features a compact footprint of 18" x 8", has a maximum part capacity of 20 lbs. and a maximum part swing of 7.35". The TR160 features an 80 lb. capacity and is available in three configurations: standard, compact and dual-platter. The TR210 handles parts up to 200 lbs. with a max part swing of 23.5", and the TR310 has a 500 lb. part capacity and a part swing of 31". Platter speeds range from 50/sec for the TR310 to 300/sec for the TR110. Additional specifications are available online.
