Wire Cutting EDM Machines Feature Improved Wire Threading

GF Machining Solutions' CUT 2000 S, with external dimensions of 2,095 x 1,950 x 2,232 mm, features a new generator concept, a module for easy wire threading under difficult conditions and availability of in-process measurement and easy automated part and tool changing.

The CUT 3000S, featuring a sleek design with rounded contours, has external dimensions of 2,685 x 2,115 x 2,232 mm.

GF Machining Solutions offers its CUT 2000 S and CUT 3000 S wire cutting electrical discharge machining (EDM) machines featuring Intelligent Power Generator (IPG) with Direct Power Supply (DPS) module. According to the company, the machines have been shown to reduce machining time by 30% and produce high-quality surface finishes of Ra ≤0.08 µm.

The optionally available THREADING-EXPERT is designed to make easy work of threading under difficult conditions. "THREADING-EXPERT is a retractable device that drives the wire from the upper guide to the upper surface start hole or, depending on the hole diameter, to the lower guide through a fine, slotted tube," said a company spokesperson. "The result is uncomplicated wire threading, even under the most difficult conditions."

The standard THREADING-EXPERT configuration includes a nozzle designed to improve threading reliability whatever the diameter (<0.03) under standard conditions (close to the surface). Also available are a nozzle for thin wire (0.03 mm to 0.07 mm) and one dedicated to 0.15 to 0.1 mm wire. Both work close to the surface without breaking through the workpiece. Moreover, two nozzles with needles (external diameter 0.4 mm and 0.8 mm) can be installed for use in cases where the wire must be driven through the workpieces to the lower guide. The needle length is 30 mm and threading can be performed with a wire up to 0.25 mm.

Available for the CUT 2000 S and CUT 3000 S is GF Machining Solutions' Automatic Wire Changer (AWC). "GF Machining Solutions pioneered automatic wire changing and remains the only EDM producer offering the feature," said the spokesperson. "The AWC paves the way to more versatility and process control because it allows the use of different diameter wires and wires of different materials. For example, a main cut can be done with a coated wire or larger diameter wire to boost cutting speed, and then automatically changed for a trim cut with standard wire to reduce running costs.

"The process is particularly efficient when a part requires use of thin wire (0.1 mm or thinner). Thin wire can now be used to cut thicker parts. For instance, an 80 mm-thick punch can now be efficiently cut with 0.1 mm wire when the main cut is done with a larger diameter wire. The result: more power, more speed.

"GF Machining Solutions' optional IVU Advance takes micro machining to the next level and ensures reliable machining results. The optical-based measurement system, designed to visualize and measure pieces directly on the machine, features fully automatic set-up by the integrated charge-coupled device (CCD) camera and duplication of measuring cycles for automation. The IVU Advance is intended to provide users with the best fit for a contour in accordance with the theoretical shape indicated by the DXF source file."

The CUT 2000 S and CUT 3000 S accommodate wires as thin as 0.050 in diameter to cut micro parts and tiny details. The range is equipped with Vision 5 numerical control for organizing and managing several unattended jobs in parallel. GF Machining Solutions' 3D probing system is designed to speed part set-up.

External dimensions of the CUT 2000 S are 2,095 x 1,950 x 2,232 mm, and dimensions of the CUT 3000 S are 2,685 x 2,115 x 2,232 mm. "The machines' cast iron, C-frame construction offers high stability and dynamic rigidity with all of the benefits of a space-saving, modern design," said the spokesperson.

Like all GF Machining Solutions products, the CUT 2000 S and CUT 3000 S are supported by a continuum of customer services customizable to users' particular needs. GF Machining Solutions' comprehensive service package includes basic and advanced preventive services, training, a dedicated help line, original wear parts and certified consumables and a Privilege Club.
