Expanding Mandrels Enhance I.D. Workholding

Dunham Tool Company, a long-time provider of precision expanding collets, also offers a unique set of expanding mandrels known as Miser Mandrels. The Expanding Mandrels offer machinists a precision method for locating and holding workpieces from the inside diameter of a part with numerous mounting applications.

The manually activated Expanding Mandrels are suited for secondary operations and can be used in operations such as turning, grinding, milling and drilling using existing machine tools and fixtures.

A company spokesperson noted, "The Dunham Expanding Mandrels are very versatile in where and how they can be used. They require no special adapters, and can easily be used in jaw chucks, collets, vises and tombstones or with other specialty fixtures."

With the workpiece positioned over the Expanding Mandrel, it is activated by turning the tapered hex head draw bolt to expand the slotted segments against the inside bore of the part. Dunham Expanding Mandrels are designed to be finish machined by the customer prior to use for maximum concentricity and accuracy relative to the user's spindle, jaw chuck or other fixture.

"With the Dunham Expanding Mandrel being machinable by the customer, it allows the user to make custom configurations for specific applications. They can be turned down or even stepped down to specific dimensions, or some users go as far as threading a portion of the mandrel for mounting and machining. The possibilities of what can be done with Dunham Expanding Mandrels are endless," conclude the spokesperson.

Dunham Expanding Mandrels come in eight standard sizes to accommodate workpiece diameters ranging from 5/16" to 6" and workpiece lengths up to 2".
