Continuous 5-Axis Machining for Specialty Dies and Molds



Makino has announced the V100S 5-axis vertical machining center (VMC). Created as a "big brother" to the V80S and V90S machines, the V100S expands the maximum work size and weight capacity.

"The V100S combines quick machine movements and accuracies with the latest software for high-speed motion control," said a company spokesperson. "Designed for high-speed finishing of multifaceted 3D contours, the V100S cuts cycle times and reduces handwork in complex specialty dies and molds. Just like the other VxxS models, the machine design incorporates infinite motion of the tool tip utilizing a tilting/rotating spindle axis unit for reduced cycle times, tighter tolerances and exceptional surface finishes."

The V100S has been built from the ground up to tackle large, heavy work. "The design begins with a unique axis configuration-featuring no overhangs-and incorporates large castings that provide a robust cutting platform," said the spokesperson. "Temperature controlled, core-cooled ball screws and support bearings help ensure long-term thermal stability. Even the servo systems are tuned for peak performance, speed and precision. Together these features reduce variability for hours of continuous, tight tolerance machining."

The V100S features X-, Y- and Z-axis travels of 78.74", 98.42" and 31.419", and a spindle tilt of 60° (+30° to -30°) and rotation of 120° (+60° to -60°) so the tool tip can be positioned to provide optimum contact with the workpiece, extending tool life, providing enhanced surface finishes and minimizing post machining hand processes. The 78.73" x 98.42" table handles a maximum workpiece size of 78.74" wide x 98.42" long x 41.33" tall and a table load capacity of 33,069 lbs.

Included in the standard configuration of the V100S machine is a productive 20,000 RPM HSK-63A spindle. The two-range spindle supplies wide range capability with the stiffness and rigidity at lower ranges for roughing operations and vibration, chatter-free production of small details and fine features utilizing small tools at high RPM.

Designed with a rigid base construction using a slant column structure, the V100S minimizes spindle-to-part distances and reduces deformation to provide a stable platform for high-precision processing, better access to the work and improved tooling flexibility. "This stiffness, combined with tilting spindle capability, enables manufacturers to process curved surfaces using multiple sides of ball-end mills, leading to higher quality machined surfaces," said the spokesperson. Additionally, the machine's slim spindle nose design provides greater accessibility and closer proximity to critical workpiece features with a wider variety of tools.

The standard V100S automatic tool changer (ATC) can store up to 40 tools, with a maximum tool length of 13.78" and maximum diameter of 3.93", improving production times and tool carrying capacity. An optional 120 tool magazine is available.

The V100S is configured with Makino's Professional 6 (Pro6) control. "With streamlined screen layouts, operator assistance features and new machine functions, Pro6 offers a seamless interface for operators to maximize productivity," said the spokesperson.

Within the Pro6 control is Makino's Super Geometric Intelligence (SGI.5) software built for high-feedrate, tight-tolerance machining of complex 3D contoured shapes involving continuous tiny blocks of NC data. "SGI.5 enables the machine to feed at rates faster than standard CNC systems while maintaining high levels of accuracy using a combination of highly refined AC digital servos and proprietary software," said the spokesperson. "The high-resolution, 3 million pulses per revolution (PPR) feedback system ensures that the servo system operates at optimum performance during execution of the toolpath. Depending upon the geometry of the application, SGI.5 produces 20% to 605 faster cycle times while upholding accuracy and surface finishes."

The V100S features Makino's proprietary Collision Safeguard technology-a function that runs real-time interference checks to avoid spindle crashes. By combining on-board machine geometry models with workpiece, fixture and tooling data input by the user, Collision Safeguard can predict and stop the machine prior to collision, protecting the fixture, tooling and workpiece and investments in the machines.
