Advanced Composites in New Sectors

Arris, a California-based company enabling the use of high-performance composites in mass-market products, has announced a strategic investment of Robert Bosch Venture Capital GmbH (RBVC). The Bosch Group's venture division RBVC joins New Enterprise Associates, Taiwania Capital, Valo Ventures and Alumni Venture Group as investors in Arris.

Arris' flagship technology, Additive Molding, is a high-speed manufacturing process that allows top brands to precisely align continuous carbon fibers and embed electronic components and multifunctional materials into a single topologically optimized part or component. "The result: a cost-effective method for manufacturing lighter, stronger, faster and more intelligent products at scale," said a company spokesperson.

RBVC's strategic investment gives Bosch early access to new product design and manufacturing possibilities for its extensive product portfolio. Arris will also draw on Bosch's industry-spanning expertise to identify applications where their high-volume, high-performance manufacturing capabilities unlock valuable new commercial advantages.

"Arris is the first company with the capability to mass-produce complex high-performance composites," said Ingo Ramesohl, Managing Director of RBVC. "This is an important development for manufacturing. Arris' scalable manufacturing and high-performance materials enable new design possibilities for future products across industries."

"We are excited to add Bosch through its venture arm, RBVC, a world-class manufacturing leader of highly engineered products, as a strategic investor," said Ethan Escowitz, CEO of Arris. "We recently opened Arris Taiwan to support our consumer electronics growth. Now we are looking forward to leveraging Bosch's extensive manufacturing and engineering expertise in automotive, industrial and consumer goods as we expand in Europe and around the world."

Skydio and Arris Revolutionize Drone Design and Manufacturing

"Skydio, a drone manufacturer and provider of autonomous flight technology, and Arris have redefined airframe design leveraging Additive Molding," said the spokesperson. Starting with the new Skydio X2 drone, enterprise, public sector and defense customers will benefit from lighter, longer-range and more robust aircraft structures at scale.

The collaboration has resulted in the first-of-its-kind production use of Arris's technology in the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) industry, further extending Skydio's technology and enabling further advantages:

  • Advanced airframe design with component consolidation allowing Skydio to replace a 17 part assembly with a single, multi-functional structure
  • Strength and stiffness of titanium at a fraction of the weight, enabling the Skydio X2 to increase range, and speed
  • Optimized carbon and glass fiber layout based on functional requirements of individual regions of the airframe
  • Scalable U.S.-based manufacturing and innovation to bring peak aerospace performance at lower cost.

"We are excited about the value that our partnership with Arris will bring to our customers. At Skydio, we pursue cutting edge innovation across all facets of drone technology. The unique properties of Arris's Additive Molding carbon fiber allow us to optimize the strength, weight and radio signal transparency of the Skydio X2 airframe to deliver a highly reliable solution that meets the needs of demanding enterprise, public safety and defense use cases," said Adam Bry, Skydio's CEO.

"The evolution of aerospace design has been punctuated by breakthroughs in manufacturing and materials. Such a moment has come where manufacturing of optimized structures has converged with composite materials ideals to unlock previously impossible, high-performance aerospace designs," said Escowitz. "While we are working with leading aerospace manufacturers to improve aircraft performance, sustainability and costs, Skydio's culture and market have enabled an unsurpassed pace of innovation that has fast-tracked this transformation to deliver the next-generation of aerostructures. It is simply amazing to see such a revolutionary product broadly available and flying today."
