Santa Rosa Junior College (SRJC) has replaced the older lathes and mills in its machining laboratory with 10 new Sharp LMV-49DVS milling machines and eight new Sharp 1440V lathes.
"These machines are perfect for training students entering the 21st century manufacturing workforce," said Bill McCracken, Program Coordinator for the SRJC Machine Tool Program. "The machines are user-friendly and students are operating them and cutting parts from the first day of class. The students are especially amazed by the digital variable speed-they can easily adjust to any RPM needed."
McCracken has been using Sharp machine tools for most of his 40 years in the machining trade. "We had Sharp lathes and mills on our repair ship, the U.S.S. Dixie, when I served in the U.S. Navy during the early 1980s," he said. "Throughout my manufacturing career, whether it was working in the ship yards in San Diego or during my aerospace career in western Colorado, Sharp machine tools were in the shops."
McCracken previously taught at Colorado Mesa University/Western Colorado Community College from 2002-2016, and during that time replaced their antiquated equipment with all new Sharp machine tools.
"Thanks to the Strong Workforce Program in California and my good friend Sam Alvarez, Regional Sales Manager at Sharp Industries, we put together a proposal to replace all the manual machines in the SRJC machining laboratory," said McCracken. "I would recommend Sharp machine tools to any training program."
SRJC's Machine Tool Technology Program is designed to prepare students for advanced entry-level employment. It provides students with the option of earning an Associate in Science degree or a Career Certificate in Machine Tool Technology. As students work to complete a degree or career certificate, they have the opportunity to earn several certificates along the way that translate into immediate, marketable skills in the industry.
