Robots' Digital Modes Fuel Enhanced Flexibility

KUKA recently unveiled the next generation of its KR QUANTEC series of robots. "Building on its predecessor's ability to deliver optimal performance and precision for applications across virtually all market segments, the new line of KR QUANTECs mixes a slimmer modular system with optional digital motion modes to deliver enhanced versatility, cost-efficiency and availability," said a company spokesperson.

From medical to foundry and cold room applications, the KR QUANTEC portfolio offers a wide variety of standard and special variants that can operate in ambient conditions ranging from 0 °C - 55 °C and be shelf- and ceiling-mounted. The robot line features a payload ranging from 120 kg to 300 kg with the ability to upgrade payload capacity in the field. An improved work envelope both in front of and behind the machine allows a greater reach from 2,700 mm to 3,900 mm.

A streamlined wrist and smaller footprint have reduced the KR QUANTEC's disruptive contours by 10% to simplify its engineering in even the most complex situations. Additional optimization of the energy supply system's disruptive contour allows easier simulation and more cost-effective cell planning. Considerably shortened robot stopping distances enable compact cell system design while providing flexibility in the planning and implementation of systems.

The KR QUANTEC's new design offers enhanced production efficiency and a sustainably lower cost of ownership (TCO) across the product's life cycle. A 50% reduction in the number of main components within the robot's modular system provides for easier replacement of parts, such as motors and gearboxes, and optimizes the mean time to repair (MTTR). The enhanced, economical cabling and energy supply minimizes maintenance and downtime because it requires no battery replacement, re-greasing of the cable set or replacement of the cable harness. All of these servicing and maintenance innovations, when combined with a new oil and sealing concept, equate to a mean time between failure (MTBF) of 400,000 operating hours.

The next generation KR QUANTEC features three, optional digital Motion Modes. These software add-ons can be easily activated to transform the robot into a highly flexible, digitalized machine that optimizes performance for important motion sequences. The versatile Performance Mode executes everything from handling and spot welding to machining and loading/unloading. Path Mode increases precision for both low and high path velocities, enabling the accurate execution of adhesive bonding, measuring and laser applications. Dynamic Mode increases the robot's speed and reduces cycle times by around 10%. Depending on the work step, the robot can switch between the individual Motion Modes.
