Coldwater Machine Company Announces Solid State Joining Center
December 1, 2014
Coldwater Machine Company has established its Solid State Joining Center, a business unit dedicated to the development of technologies that address the challenges of joining lightweight and dissimilar materials. Located in the same building as its parent company, the Solid State Joining unit includes a weld development lab, which already hosts five friction welding systems for testing and low-volume production.
"We have extensive experience in providing friction welding solutions to our customers," said Coldwater Machine President Tim McCaughey, "but with the intense focus on lightweighting in the automotive industry increasing the use of aluminum, magnesium and composites, we are investing our resources to be on the forefront of providing the leading edge manufacturing technologies required to successfully bring these new materials to market."
Solid state joining processes enable the joining of materials at temperatures below the melting point of these materials and without the addition of filler metal or shielding gases. The metals being joined retain their original properties without the heat-affected zone problems involved when there is base metal melting. The Coldwater Solid State Joining Center has already developed friction spin weld systems and is expanding production solutions for the newer friction spot weld technology.
