High-Speed Innovation: Torque Motor and Y-axis
December 1, 2014
With the new optional Y-axis in the table, it is possible to edit the workpiece at each position. The axis has a travel range of +200/-400 mm.
"The success of torque motors, which have been fitted to around 30 vertical grinding machines since 2005, gave rise to the idea of switching from conventional chain and gear drives to a transmission that contains no mechanical parts," said a Starrag spokesperson. "This new concept started to take shape in 2012, when a Russian aircraft manufacturer purchased two Berthiez TVU 2000/160 vertical lathes." These two machines, available from Starrag, were equipped with a torque motor drive delivering up to 10,000 Nm at 350 RPM.
The torque motor features integrated turning and cutting drive functions. "This simplifies the drive train, as the number of components and mechanical assemblies is significantly reduced," said the spokesperson. "Reliability increases as a direct result - and there are benefits during maintenance as well."
A milling spindle with power up to 36 kW and 350 Nm has been integrated into the slide valve, which measures 250 x 250 mm. The second machine also features a Y-axis with a table path of +200/-400 mm. This assembly is complemented by a universal milling head with a tilt of -5° to +100°, power of 15 kW, a speed of 3,000 RPM and torque of 200 Nm.
