Micro Drills for Small Part Production

Seco Feedmax SD22 and SD26 solid carbide micro drills are designed for machining small precision holes in the 0.1 mm (.0004") to 2.0 mm (.078") diameter range with step increments of 0.01 mm (0.0003").

"The drills offer substantial improvements over traditional HSS drills in terms of productivity, tool life, hole quality and a lower cost per part," said a company spokesperson.

The uncoated SD22 pilot micro drill with a 130° point angle is designed for holemaking operations that involve cutting diameters below 1 mm (.039") and drilling depths up to 2xD. Also uncoated and featuring a 130° point angle, the SD26 is suitable for two-step drilling processes that involve a pilot drill or direct drilling in depths up to 6xD. The shank size for both micro drills is 3 mm in diameter with an h6 tolerance.

For best results, Seco recommends using the SD22 and SD26 with precision collet chucks or hydraulic chucks. In terms of coolant mix, Seco recommends an emulsion mix between 6 and 8%; however, when drilling in stainless steels, super alloys and high strength steels, the recommended mix is 10%.
