3-D Vision-Equipped System Organizes Mixed Castings for Robotic Loading
July 1, 2014
Fastems Factory Automation has developed a system to sort mixed castings. Mixed, cast components randomly placed in a gitter box or other container are recognized by a robot vision system and delivered for the next step in automated machining operations including a robot cell, transfer line or a complete FMS.
This fully automated 3-D Bin Picking System does away with operator handling of heavy castings, groups like parts onto pallets for robotic loading and identifies such casting defects as cavities and surface faults to both eliminate wasted machining time and insure part quality.
Using 3-D vision technology, robots equipped with special grippers and proprietary software, parts are identified via the vision system by comparing to a 3-D CAD image. Identical workpieces are then placed on a pallet by a robot arm, ready to be fed into the next phase of the automated process. Each part can also be weighed to identify casting cavities and laser scanned to find surface faults.
